A Memorable Teaching Experience: The most rewarding experience is when a student develops an interest in the subject beyond what they are required to learn. One student became so interested that I gave him a copy of my favorite math book, Creative Mathematics, one of my favorite books about understanding Calculus from the ground up. I’m not sure he’ll ever read it, but I know his interest in math has continued into college because I still work with him from time to time. In our sessions, we always spare a couple of minutes to talk about interesting mathematical concepts, like the different infinities, that further develop his interest in math.

Personal Rewarding Educational Experience: My most rewarding experience was taking classes from Dr. Walker and Dr. Johnson at U of H. In these classes, students were required to prove all theorems presented, in front of the class and with minimal help from the professors. These classes fostered not only my love of mathematics, but also my love of teaching.

Why I Tutor: Watching a student grow and change is an incredibly rewarding experience. Seeing them apply the things they have learned from you to new situations is a wonderful feeling. I also feel like I bring something to the experience that students appreciate: a sense of humour. Many students want to be completely serious during tutoring, and that is how our tutoring sessions will go. Some, however, learn better if they have an opportunity to laugh while they learn, and these are my favorite students to work with, even if the other tutors occasionally have to ask us to keep it down. People appreciate Math much more when they realize it doesn’t have to be dry and boring.

Biography: In my time at the University of Houston, I have obtained a B.A., an M.S., and a Ph.D. in Mathematics. I have been, a student and a TA, and am currently a lecturer, teaching everything from Precalculus, to Differential Equations, to Statistics.

I have been working for Choice Tutoring since I was still working on my B.A. in Mathematics. Over the last 10 plus years, I have worked with students of all ages and levels, and I credit my time at Choice for helping me improve my teaching skills to the level they are at today.

Future Goals: I am currently in line for a promotion at the University of Houston that would finally grant me the title of Professor. I plan to continue teaching for as long as I am able.
